Welcome to the Forest Area Community Schools' Website
We are located in beautiful northern Michigan, approximately 35 minutes southeast of Traverse City, MI. I am honored to be the Superintendent and Elementary Principal working with a great group of students, staff, families, and community members. Our entire staff works closely in collaborative teams called Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). During PLC’s, teachers meet to have frequent, consistent, and data-driven conversations about student achievement. Parents of students have been very supportive of our PLC initiative. Teachers and administrators meet on “Late Start Wednesdays” scheduled throughout the year for a 60 minute period. Students arrive at school an hour later on these special days. Also during the 60 minute period, support staff members provide tutoring for struggling learners and parents have an opportunity to drop kids off early if the late start presents a problem with daycare, bussing, etc.
Forest Area would like to extend a tremendous thank you to our communities. Our district passed a technology bond of almost a million dollars! This has presented a huge opportunity for staff to improve students’ educational experience and bring them into the 21st Century. Some highlights of our technology bond include document cameras, LCD projectors, sound systems, desktop computers, netbooks, iPads, and Chromebooks. We also have a sinking fund which allows us to continue upgrades in our buildings and grounds at both campuses. The highlight of last summer’s work included a complete renovation of our boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. Our physical education students and athletes now have a clean space with new lockers and ample space to change and store personal items.
This introductory letter only begins to detail the many opportunities available to our students at Forest Area Community Schools. Please take a few moments to enjoy our website and do not hesitate to call if you have questions. I’d be more than happy to talk about the great things happening in our schools!
